Find out more about Breaking Olympics, how it works, how top USA athletes and international athletes perform at the Paris Olympics, and the schedule for Breaking.
The debut of Breaking Olympics in Paris
Breaking (or Breakdancing – what most people know this sport by) will make its debut at the Paris Olympics 2024 as the only new sport added to the Games. But it has not been confirmed for the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles, which means breaking might only appear this one time.
How Does Breaking Work?
Breaking Competition Format and Rules
One-on-one battles will be featured by both men and women in breaking competitions in the Olympics. Each B-boy or B-girl will try to impress a panel of nine judges by performing several moves. This can include flips, acrobatic spins, and top rocking – all are dance elements performed while standing.
Competitors will also be judged on criteria like musicality, creativity, and how they interact with the music.
Music and Judging
Hip-hop is the pre-decided soundtrack for every battle at olympic breakdancing 2024. Despite that, competitors will not know ahead of time what style or temple the DJ will play. This is where their creativity will come out, a crucial factor that judges will consider.
Top Team USA Athletes in Breaking Olympics
Victor Montalvo, also known as B-boy Victor, earned his spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics by winning the 2023 World Championships in Belgium. Victor has been a top competitor for over a decade. Another breakdancing Olympics 2024 team USA athlete is B-boy Jeffro, who secured a late qualifying spot and both are expected to perform greatly in Paris.
International Competitors in Breaking Olympics
Breaking started in New York, Bronx to be exact. So, there is no surprise that the US has been a dominant force in this sport. However, Japan is also in the race with B-boy Shigekix, a strong contender, and is likely to win a medal at the Olympics. Other than that, the Olympics have contenders from countries including Canada, China, France, and the Netherlands.
