Sport climbing combined Olympics debuted at the Tokyo Games in 2021. Before that, this sport was first performed at the Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games in 2018. Climbing Olympics 2024 was added to attract younger audiences and expand the Olympic program with more urban sports, alongside skateboarding and surfing. Climbing will continue to be part of the Olympics at the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Games.
Disciplines of Climbing Olympics 2024
Olympic climbing has three disciplines: bouldering, lead, and speed. Here’s what they mean:
Bouldering: Climbers in bouldering scale a 4.5-meter wall (about 15 feet) without any ropes. The athletes have limited time to reach the top in the fewest attempts possible.
Lead: For lead climbing, athletes climb as high as possible on a 15-meter wall (about 50 feet) within six minutes. They only get one attempt.
Speed: Last but not least, speed climbing includes one-on-one races up a 15-meter wall with a 5-degree incline. Top climbing Olympics 2024 athletes can do it in less than six seconds, while the best female athletes do it in seven seconds. In the Paris 2024 Games, speed climbing is a separate event, while bouldering and lead are the same.
Scoring System of Speed Climbing Olympics
Since the Tokyo Games 2020, the scoring system for sport-climbing combined Olympics 2024 has changed.
Bouldering:
For this, climbers earn points by reaching various zones on the wall:
Low Zone: 5 points, High Zone: 10 points, Top Hold: 25 points
The points for bouldering are deducted for extra attempts. A perfect round of flashing four boulders is worth 100 points.
Lead:
For lead, climbers earn points for each of the top 40 holds they secure. If they attempt but fail, they get 0.1 points on top of their previous score.
Speed:
Speed climbers do two runs on different walls. Their fastest time decides the Climbing Olympics 2024 qualifying athletes and matchups for elimination rounds.
20 men and 20 women compete in bouldering and lead, while 14 men and 14 women compete in speed.
