Our beloved Robert Downey Jr. is making a comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) – but not in the way you might expect.
Over nine MCU movies, Robert has been seen wearing the iconic Iron Man suit, but now, he will be stepping into the role of Doctor Doom in a new movie titled “Avengers Doomsday.”
This news came on Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con during the Marvel panel. Fans were surprised by Robert Downey Jr. as he appeared on stage in Hall H, the event’s largest venue. He addresses his fans and said, “New mask, same task.” “What did I tell ya? I like playing complicated characters.”
Avengers Doomsday Release and Directors
According to a press release, Avengers Doomsday will hit the theaters in May 2026, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. They have previously directed four Marvel movies and now, are all set to direct “Avengers Secret Wars,” scheduled to be released in May 2027.
Downey Jr.’s MCU Legacy
Previously, the Oscar-winner actor, Robert Downey Jr. has expressed his willingness to work in more MCU movies. In an interview with Esquire in April, Robert said he’d “happily” return because the Marvel Cinematic Universe “is too integral a part of my DNA.”
Further, Downey Jr. first depicted the superhero Iron Mon in the 2008 movie with the same name – and two sequels. He has been seen in several other Marvel franchise movies, such as “Infinity Wars” in 2018 and “Spider-Man Homecoming”, till his character was famously killed in “Endgame” in 2019.
Let’s discuss Downey’s legacy in the MCU in detail:
Robert Downey Jr.’s existence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is legendary. As Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, he played a crucial part in shaping the Marvel universe into what it is today. His first project as Iron Man in 2008 definitely set the tone for what would become an extensive cinematic universe.
Robert has a unique charm and quick wit which added to the character of Tony Stark and made him one of our all-time favorite characters. He turned Stark from a wealthy, flawed genius into a much-loved hero. Robert Downey perfectly balanced his humor and seriousness, which made Tony Stark both relatable and captivating to watch.
Furthermore, Iron Man was the key character in beginning the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which led to a series of hit films. His interactions with other characters, such as Captain America and Spider-Man added to the depth to the stories.
Unfortunately, our beloved Iron Man’s journey ended in Avengers: Endgame, released in 2019. Even though he is no longer playing the iconic role Downey is known for, he will still be creating magic on screen with his upcoming projects and will continue to inspire and shape future stories.

The Marvel Multiverse and Downey’s Double Duty
Marvel has always been known for keeping their fans on their toes, so many questions remain about how the universe will balance the double duty of Robert Downey Jr. With that being said, the Marvel Multiverse is infinitely vast, allowing for endless possibilities (like the return of Hugh Jackman in “Deadpool & Wolverine.”).
One more thing, Robert Downey Jr. upcoming movies such as “Avengers Doomsday” will replace the previously announced “Avengers The Kang Dynasty” in the MCU release calendar.
Changes in the MCU Lineup
Before Robert, Jonathan Majors was to star in “Avengers The Kang Dynasty” in 2026. But, he was dropped by the studio after being found guilty of assault and harassment in a 2023 trial. Shortly after the verdict, Marvel Studios decided to move forward on any future projects with Majors, a source told CNN.
